Four on a Saturday
Saturday. Valentine’s weekend. The captain is sulking on the galleon because a pair of newlyweds robbed him blind last night and held hands while they did it. He has written three pages about it. I have read them. I have not told him I have read them.
This morning another pair came to the shanty, very sweet, very sunburnt and very surprised to learn that Saturdays take four or more. It is the busiest day on the island, and the bookings like a full crew.
I told them what I tell everybody. Weekdays, two is plenty. Here in Perth on a Saturday, ring on the day or just turn up and ask, and if a session has room, in you go. The pair asked at the desk, and there was a gap after lunch. In they went.
They did beautifully. Two people who know each other well waste no time explaining. One reads, one rummages, and they meet in the middle with the answer.
I gave them a shell on the way out. Not from the room. From my pocket. A first mate is allowed a pocket.
