The Crew

Everyone aboard the galleon and on the island, and a few the Crew made up because every ship needs a cook.

Also known as
Terror of the Seas (all of them) · “The Captain”

Motto
“What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is probably mine.”
Fan rating

The villain of both rooms: captain of the galleon in Pirates, owner of the beach shanty in Pirate Island, and the proud keeper of a ship’s log that is mostly about how clever he is.

He cannot work out how his prisoners keep escaping. The Crew can. His log never mentions the first mate in the corner, quietly leaving the right doors unlatched.

Known for: His log · Stolen treasure · Making prisoners walk the plank (eventually) · Missing the obvious

Scarface

Also known as
The first mate · The prisoners’ only friend
Current status
Scowling, and secretly on your side
First seen
Pirate Island, Northbridge, 26 December 2021 (on the record)
Motto
“Never look helpful. Always be helpful.”
Fan rating

Jack’s scowling first mate, who built the island shanty with his own hands and has been quietly helping prisoners out of it ever since, while making very sure the captain never finds out.

Ask him about the scar and you get a different story every time: a hammock, a shark, a kraken, a pineapple. He keeps a secret journal, and the Crew has the only copy.

Known for: The secret journal · The scar stories · Leaving doors unlatched

“Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight! (She has never seen one.)”
Fan rating

Calico Jack’s parrot, who rides on his shoulder, eats his biscuits and repeats everything she hears at the worst possible moment.

Fans believe Duchess knows exactly who has been helping the prisoners. Fans also believe she has decided not to say, in exchange for crackers.

Known for: Repeating secrets · Crackers · Judging the crew

Ship’s articles · Lottie Spyglass

Lottie Spyglass

Motto
“Sail ho! (Probably a seagull.)”
Fan rating

The galleon’s lookout, who can spot a sail at fifty leagues and a seagull at fifty-one. She is the one who shouts when the Jolly Roger comes back over the reef, which is the moment every Pirate Island crew dreads.

Lottie and Scarface are, in fan lore, the best of friends. She has been known to shout “Sail ho!” very early when the prisoners need more time.

Known for: The spyglass · Shouting “Sail ho!” · Buying prisoners a little time

Ship’s articles · Madame Coralie

Madame Coralie

Also known as
The island fortune teller · Reader of shells
Current status
Behind the palms, reading your fortune in a clam
First seen
The Spyglass Gazette letters page
Motto
“The shells see all. The shells mostly see sand.”
Fan rating

Every pirate island has a fortune teller, and this one reads shells on the beach below the shanty. She tells every crew the same fortune: “You will find treasure, and then you will need to run.”

She has been right every time. The Crew suspects she has simply played the room.

Known for: Shell fortunes · Being right · Never being on the island when Jack lands

Calico Jack, Scarface and Duchess come from the rooms and their diaries. Cookie Marlowe, Lottie Spyglass and Madame Coralie were invented by the Crew.
